‘There was conflict in Jammu-Kashmir, as there has been for decades over the disputed land claimed by both Pakistan and India, as well as the Kashmiris fighting for independence. Given the rising tensions at the time, many from the area had fled to their nearby farms and cottages in neighboring states and provinces, like this girl, who had abandoned her studies in Srinagar and made her way to the family’s farm cottage with her mother in the Nubra Valley. I was riding a motorbike through the valley as I came across the modest little village of stone piled walls and houses, where I met her and her mother who invited me in for a local Kashmiri pink salt tea, with hot bread and carrots pulled straight from the ground.’
