‘We needed shelter. We’d needed shelter for about 2 hours since the fog had swept over the mountains and the rain had begun. Thankfully, dotted along the Singalila Ridge trek, which twists in and out of India and Nepal in the North-eastern corner of India beyond Darjeeling, are the much-needed respites of tea stops. This one, in the small village of Kalapokhri – meaning dark lake – housed a game of carambot, or carrom, an Indian table-top game like billiards, played with fingers instead of cues. It was being played by a few older gentlemen in the dark corner of the hut as tea was served along with fried rice and chow mein.’
