‘I was quite lost. I’d arrived in Leh that morning in the early hours following a 15-hour bumpy bus ride and had parked myself in the first guest house I could find. My orientation of where I was in relation to the bustling bazaar I had heard so much about was somewhat malfunctioning, perhaps because of the 4 hours sleep I’d had over the previous 48 hours, and so I walked in the opposite direction to where I thought I wanted to go. As I strolled the surprisingly quiet streets I came across this scene on the side of the road. A man and his daughter, nestled beneath a hole-riddled tarpaulin, surrounded by shoe repair supplies: laces and soles, string and polish scattered considerately in front of them. I motioned to my camera for permission to take a photo. While the girl took no notice of me and continued to play with a 10 rupee note, the man merely tilted his said to one side with an expression of indifference and contentment, as if to say: ‘take it now, or in 5 years, this is where I will be, and that’s okay’.’
