‘I had heard about Leh through my dads’ stories of the far North-western stretches of India and was curious to compare its current appearance to that which I had seen from some 30 years earlier. While the streets had become home to more ‘German’ bakeries and ‘Free Wi-fi’ signs than were surely present in the 80s, what remained seemingly untouched was the castle up the mountain that watched over the city and the mountainous valleys beyond it. I climbed up to its doorstep and walked its permitter whilst looking down on the ancient city, wondering how much more change the castle and its prayer flags would inevitably witness.’
