‘The Wagah-Atari border ceremony celebrates and acknowledges both the brotherhood and the conflict that is the India – Pakistan relationship. Attracting thousands of visitors to both sides of the border daily, the ceremony boasts an impressive display of militarised, and somewhat comical, performances, consisting of competitive marching, high kicks, and an MC that really gets the crowd going. Located in the state of Punjab on the Indian side - a predominantly Sikh state in North-western India - this photograph of the crowd opposite me, layered with one of the many Victorian style lampposts that lines the street, embodies the colourful and vibrant atmosphere of the event, which only a few years previously was the site of a devastating terrorist attack on the Pakistan side of the gate.’
