“The Nubra Valley wiggles and winds its way north towards the border of Pakistan in the far reaches of Northern India. The final destination before the recommended U-turn at the border is the humble village of Turtuk. The village rests above the level of the river and could easily be missed given the subtlety of its signage having only been open for tourism (at the time in 2016) for two years. In that time, the influence of Western tourism is palpable as children as young as 5 descended upon me, hands raised and open with eyes wide and expecting. As hopingly helpful travellers oblige, the question is raised: does our desire for exploration and adventure cause more harm than good for communities and settlements that thrived long before our arrival?”
